During Stonington’s early heyday as a bustling granite quarrying community, The Teahouse Restaurant commenced serving the hard working population of blasters, stone cutters and quarrymen. As the granite industry waned, and the lobstering trade grew, lobstermen and fisherman were the new patrons of this popular local establishment. Nestled on a cascading hillside bordering Stonington Harbor and capturing spectacular views across Stonington Harbor and beyond, it was only natural that after The Teahouse closed its doors, it was perfectly situated to transform into a small cottage.....and what a transformation!
The new owner has masterfully converted this former small teahouse into a romantic, cozy getaway, considering every detail. Every space is beautifully utilized, where stylish décor mixed with original touches exudes warmth and sophistication. From modern granite counter tops to the original claw foot tub, you will feel right at home in this beautifully appointed home. Built-in cushioned window seating and cabinets, pine, oak and cork flooring, and quality furnishings throughout all add to the comfort and coziness of your home away from home. French doors and ample windows bring in the suns' warmth and glow, while the gas “woodstove” relieves the early morning and evening chill. Cathedral ceilings, graced with a small stained glass window in the gable, bestow an open and airy feel. Superior touches throughout the home--a flat screen TV with cable, CD and DVD player and a collection of recent movies--promise to make your stay more than comfortable.
Situated near some of Stonington’s most beautiful homes, Tea House Cottage is encircled by Victorians, Mansards, Farmhouses and a variety of picturesque homes enjoying the amazing scenery, all overlooking Stonington Harbor. Caring property owners have collaboratively encouraged the expansion of a small field of lupine bordering the cottage, and surrounding gardens, rock wall, natural ledge, and nearby spruce clad forest, which provides a pleasurable setting – all to be enjoyed from the Tea House’s wrap around deck, complete with seating and flower boxes.
The cottage is very well supplied. A large lobster pot is ready for fresh lobster that can be purchased just a short walk to the nearby lobster coop. Between the gas grill, gas stove and mini-gourmet kitchen, you’ll enjoy meals prepared at home, while just a short walk to downtown brings you to Stonington’s popular restaurants. Two trail bikes are available for those more adventurous. Guests may wish to bike to the Isle au Haut Ferry just on the other side of the harbor and take the morning ferry over to Isle au Haut, part of Acadia National Park, for a great day of biking and hiking. Ample activities await throughout Deer Isle and the surrounding communities, while The Tea House’s cozy ambiance awaits your return.
