Explore Deer Isle and the Blue Hill Peninsula
Sedgwick

The charming town center of Sedgwick is located on
the banks of the Benjamin River, as her waters join Eggemoggin Reach and
Blue Hill Bay.
The
wider community of Sedgwick borders Blue Hill, Brooklin, Brooksville and
Sargentville. It boast one of the most photographed views in the
state, Caterpillar Hill, which provides sweeping views from its elevated
vantage, overlooking blueberry barrens out to Penobscot Bay, the hills of
Camden, Isle au Haut, and Jericho Bay. Sedgwick was one of the earlier
settled communities, with perhaps Europeon exploration and settlement
predating Columbus. It is home to the oldest town house in continuous
use in Maine, where annual town
meetings
are still held to this day. Incorporated in 1789, Sedgwick became
known for its shipbuilding, tanning, cooperage, and mining. Before the
advent of refrigeration, Sedgwick was strategic for its "Ice Trade", where
mammoth chunks of ice were harvested
from
area lakes and sent to as far away places as India. Sedgwick's
historic homes and buildings stand today as reminders of its earlier days,
and add to the beauty of the area's rolling hills, forests, grasslands,
brooks, steams, lakes and shoreline. Commitment to conservation offers
sanctuary to wild creatures such as black bear and their cubs, white tailed
deer, coyotes, foxes, rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks. Wild
turkey and
quail
are prevalent in the tall grasses, and various hawk species and eagles nest
in trees. A wide variety of migrating birds stop in this area on
their passage going north and south, resulting in this area being a bird
watchers paradise. Some birds, such as arctic snow buntings, make this
area their home through the cold winter months. Today, a variety of artist
have made this area their residence, opening their homes to share and sell
their artistic creations.
